It’s been a while since I shared our monthly grocery haul. This past year has been a whirlwind, so I haven’t been as organized and intentional as I like to be. With rising food prices, our grocery spending has been higher than it ever has. Still, in the past 12 months, our average monthly spending on food for our family of 8 has only been $711.

Even with inflation, you can still feed your family without breaking the bank.

Of course this just doesn’t happen. I have specific strategies that I use to keep our budget low. I share those strategies in my course Grocery Budget Hero. The course includes 20 lessons that build on one another. The 4+ hours of video content is divided up into manageable chunks so no matter how busy you are, you can still find time for this valuable training. Use the code SAVE20 to get $20 off and get your grocery budget under control.

Before making May’s monthly grocery shopping trip, I made a very well thought out plan. I planned all of the meals that I would be making and wrote down all of the ingredients, then checked the pantry and freezer to see what we already had. Everything else went on my grocery list.

I have found that homemade freezer meals work best for our family. We have busy schedules, so having ready-made meals that just need to be thawed and heated works really well for us. I am planning for us to eat 5 freezer meals per week (20 per month). My goal is to make 40 at once so that I have a good variety to stretch over two months. We’ll see how it goes with freezer space though.

We keep our food storage, pantry, and freezer pretty well-stocked, so we don’t shop for everything every month. This month I shopped at Sam’s Club and Winco. You can either watch the video below or just scroll down for the exact prices.

Sam’s Club- $227

  • Powdered Sugar (7 lb) $6.98 x 4 = $27.92
  • Honey (48 oz) $9.98
  • Clementines (5 lb) $5.92

  • Half and Half (1 qt) $2.48
  • Kit Kat Ice Cream Cones $7.88

  • Eggs (5 dz) $13.97
  • Ground Beef (5 lb) $13.98
  • Garbanzo beans (1 lb) $1.48 x 4 = $5.92
  • Kidney beans (1 lb) $1.28 x 4 = $5.12
  • Granny Smith Apples $.98/lb x 5 lb = $4.99
  • Honeycrisp Apples $.98/lb x 6.4 lb = $6.27
  • Strawberries (1 lb) $1.28 x 24 = $30.72
  • Shell Pasta (1 lb) $1.18
  • Dried Apricots $5/lb x .38 lb = $1.90
  • Limes $.25 x 4 = $1.00
  • Salsa (32 oz) $3.28 x 2 = $6.56
  • Graham Crackers $2.18 x 6 = $13.08
  • Potatoes (5 lb) $98 x 2 = $1.96
  • Cilantro $.57
  • Coriander $4.48/lb x .06 lb = $.27
  • Baby Carrots ( 1 lb) $1.28 x 2 = $2.56
  • Carrots (2 lb) $1.48
  • White Onions $.78/lb x 3.2 lb = $2.52
  • Yellow Onions $.68/lb x 5.75 = $3.91
  • Oranges (8 lb) $5.98
  • Green Chilis (4 oz) $.78 x 4 = $3.12

  • Bread $2.55 x 8 = $20.40
  • English Muffins $2.58 x 4 = $10.32
  • Corn Tortillas $3.26

So in May we spent $408 on our monthly grocery haul. We will still make other small shopping trips for more produce and lots of milk (we go through nearly a gallon a day, but we already had milk in the fridge when I went shopping), but the bulk of our shopping is done.

In addition to making lots of freezer meals, I will be making homemade yogurt, granola, oatmeal packets, cornbread, and rolls (freezing balls of dough from this recipe for rolls) in bulk so we are set for the month.

I would love to hear how these prices compare to what you are currently paying. And if you’re surprised that my prices are better than you’d expect for California, you’re not wrong. Knowing where to shop and what to buy really is a game-changer. I would have to pay twice as much if I just went to a regular grocery store in my area. It’s definitely worth it for me to drive 30 minutes away to do my monthly shopping where I do.

My monthly grocery shopping trip didn’t go as planned. I always try to combine errands since the stores I shop at are a half hour away.  I had to drive a child to a practice that was near Winco so it was going to work out perfectly to do the shopping while I waited for her. I was excited because I would have my grocery shopping done bright and early on the first day of the month.

Only I left my purse at home.

I thought through my options. Winco doesn’t even take credit cards, so I was pretty certain they didn’t have any modern payment options via phone apps available either. So Winco was a no-go. Sam’s Club, on the other hand, would work out fine because I can use “Scan & Go” to checkout on the Sam’s Club app.

So this month’s monthly shopping is just Sam’s Club. I’ll probably stop by Winco later in the month when I’m in town, but there isn’t anything urgent that I need there. We will be just fine without going there in August. (Hooray for keeping a stocked pantry and having food storage!)

Sam’s Club- $151

  • Powdered Sugar (7 lb) $6.24
  • Brown Sugar (7 lb) $6.24 x 2 = $12.48
  • Croutons (32 oz) $5.28
  • Ranch Dressing $9.98
  • Parmesan Cheese $7.88
  • Spaghetti (6 lb) $5.48
  • Peanut Butter (40 oz x 2) $7.56 x 3 = $22.68
  • Tortillas (35 oz x 2) $6.18
  • String Cheese (36 ct) $7.34
  • Cottage Cheese (3 lb) $4.98
  • Shredded Cheese (5 lb) $17.18
  • Romaine $3.28
  • Ice Cream (1.25 gal) $7.28
  • Spinach (16 oz) $3.48
  • Broccoli (2 lb) $5.06
  • Gala Apples (5 lb) $5.88
  • Fuji Apples (5 lb)  $5.53
  • Sour Cream (3 lb) $4.98
  • Bananas (3 lb) $1.58 x 6 = $9.48

I haven’t shared our grocery hauls in a while. It’s not that we haven’t shopped. We have!  We just haven’t done a monthly grocery shopping trip like we normally do.

It has cost us too! If you’ve seen our last couple of budget updates you know that our food spending was up. I’m pretty confident that the spending increase is more from multiple (and additional) shopping trips than from inflation.

I’m off to a good start in July with a monthly grocery haul from Sam’s Club, Winco, and Save Mart.

If you would rather see what we bought and listen as I talk through each of the items, its price, and other details, you can watch or listen to the video below, or just keep reading for the full price list.

In total we spent $387.

Winco– $204

  • Strawberries $.98 x 60 = $58.80
  • Sugar (50 lb) $25.00
  • Celery $.98
  • Red seedless grapes $.98/lb x 10.71lb = $10.50
  • Baby carrots $.98 x 2 = $1.96
  • Roma tomatoes $.98/lb x 5.17 lb = $5.07
  • Granny smith apples $.98/lb x 10.51 = $10.30
  • Green onions $.48
  • Cilantro $.48
  • Tortilla chips $1.48 x 3 = $4.44
  • Onions (3 lb) $1.98
  • Whole wheat bread $2.42 x 6 = $14.52
  • Texas toast $2.56 x 3 = $7.68
  • Pretzels $1.98 x 6 = $11.88

  • Shredded cheese (5 lb) $16.98
  • Sour cream $4.98
  • Egg (5 dozen) $11.42
  • 2% milk $3.74 x 4 = $14.96
  • Gala apples (5 lb) $5.88
  • Romaine hearts (6 ct) $3.28
  • Broccoli florets (2 lb) $3.48 x 2 = $6.96
  • Bananas (3 lb) $1.58 x 4 = $6.32

With our garden starting to produce, along with everything we have in the freezer, pantry, and food storage, we should not need too many other things throughout the month.

It’s Your Turn!

What are food prices like where you live?

Have you decided to adjust your budget because of inflation or are you managing fine with your standard grocery budget?

Hey friends!  I’m back with another monthly grocery haul!  I took a break from sharing our grocery shopping for a while.

In the beginning of the year I was focusing all of my blogging time and energy on working with my Grocery Budget Hero students. Then, I got super busy with homeschooling my four oldest kiddos.  It has been great, just a lot of work!

I really had a great time sharing all of my strategies for having a low grocery budget and sticking to it in my Grocery Budget Hero course!  If you missed out the first time around, I suggest joining the waitlist so you can be the first to know when the course opens up again.  If you want to lower your grocery spending and actually stick to your budget, then this course is guaranteed to help you!  UPDATE: Grocery Budget Hero is now open for enrollment!

For those who are new here, our family of 8 budgets $500 per month for groceries.  We spend the majority of that in one big monthly grocery haul.  In February, we spent about $400 in our monthly haul, which included shopping at Winco, Sam’s Club, and a local orchard.

The funny thing about our shopping trips is that it really doesn’t give you any idea of what our actual menu will be.  In addition to fresh produce and dairy, I shop according to what we are getting low on in our pantry and food storage, as well as what is on sale.  Most of the things on our menu are made from ingredients we already have in our pantry, food storage, or freezer.

This month’s haul included some things we normally don’t buy because we are getting ready for a road trip.  Would you like to see how we plan for frugal food on a road trip?  I will work on a post and video to show you our money-saving methods.  We are also excited to be eating produce from our garden right now!

If you want to see a video walkthrough of June’s grocery haul, you can check out the video below, otherwise, scroll down for the complete price breakdown!

  • Tater tots (32 oz) $1.68 x 6 = $10.08
  • Salad dressing $1.98
  • Yogurt $.30 x 48 = $14.40
  • Wheat (25 lb) $14 x 2 = $28.04
  • Mini chocolate chips 3.38 lb x $2.88/lb = $9.73
  • Ice cream $2.68 x 3 = $8.04
  • Ice cream cones $1.28
  • Ice cream cones $1.58

Sam’s Club $262

  • Raisins  $8.98
  • Shredded parmesan cheese (24 0z) $9.78
  • Carrots (5 lb) $2.74
  • Pork Sausage (2 lb) $5.58 x 3 = $16.74

  • Bananas (3 lb) $1.49 x 4 = $5.96
  • Strawberries (2 lb) $3.22 x 4 =$12.88

  • Probiotic dried apricots (40 oz) $9.98
  • Dried apricots (26 oz) $4.98
  • Boneless skinless chicken breast $1.76/lb x 11.4 lb = $20.06

Other than the food from this haul, we will have a few smaller shopping trips here and there for milk and other things for our trip, but this pretty much takes care of what we will get for the month.

I hope you are well!  I’ve missed checking in with you!  Now that school is out and life calms down a little for me, you’ll hear more regularly from me.

I debated about doing a grocery haul this month.  Not just a post/video, but doing a grocery shopping trip at all!  We have lots of produce from our summer and fall garden and plenty of food storage.  There wasn’t really much that we needed, but I went ahead and shopped just to replenish our food storage.

For those who are new here, I do my grocery shopping a little different than many people.  Instead of shopping from a menu and buying exactly the things I’ll need for our monthly meals, I shop according to what’s on sale and what we’re running low on.  I like to be well-stocked on the ingredients we use regularly AND the things we store for our long-term food storage.

In addition to the things I knew we were low on, I was eager to see what seasonal items were on sale. This time I restocked some canned veggies like corn, diced tomatoes, and French cut green beans.  We don’t use canned veggies all that often, but they are perfect for long-term food storage, as canned food lasts indefinitely.  I ordered diced tomatoes from Sam’s Club before I knew that they were going to be a super great price at Winco.  I’ve never seen them that low ($.46) since we’ve lived in California.

I got chocolate covered raisins, M&Ms, and Hershey kisses for Christmas.  They are much cheaper per ounce to buy them from Sam’s Club.  I divvy them up into smaller bags to go into stockings.

If you want to head into the store with me, you can watch the video below, otherwise just checkout the price list below that!

We have had pretty big grocery hauls lately, but October’s was different.  I waited until the middle of the month to go shopping, and even then we really didn’t need to go.  With the experience of our quarantine food storage challenge and with a garden that’s still producing, we are doing just fine.

Still, I wanted to go grocery shopping to restock some things that we use regularly and grab some things to try.

For example, I bought oyster crackers for the first time ever.  I’m thinking they will be fun for soup season, especially for some of the kids who complain about soup.  We’ll see how it works!

In total we spent around $260 for our monthly grocery haul, which is definitely on the low side for us.  That should make it easy to stick to a $500 food budget during this month, which will be nice since last month was a little crazy in the grocery area!

I made a quick shop-with-me video of what we got or you can just scroll down for the complete price list!

Winco $107

  • Maccaroni 3lb $1.98 x 2 = $3.96
  • Spaghetti 3lb $1.98 x 2 = $3.96

  • Raw Sunflower Seeds 1.44/lb x 1.53lb = $2.20
  • Cilantro $.48
  • Green onion $.48
  • Winco Mac’n’cheese $.38 x 12 = $4.56
  • Baby carrots (2lb) $1.88 x 2 = $3.76
  • Grapes $.98/lb x 10.96 lb = $10.74
  • Frozen blueberries (16 oz) $1.88 x 2 = $3.76
  • Frozen mixed berries (16 oz) $1.88 x 2 = $3.76
  • Diced green chilis $.60x 4 = $2.40
  • Yogurt cups $.30 x 2 = $.60
  • Winco whole wheat bread $1.78 x 9 = $16.02

  • Fruit snacks (100 ct) $8.98
  • Vanilla ice cream (1.25 gal) $2.90 x 3 = $8.73
  • Cream cheese (4- 8 oz packages) $4.94

Definitely my favorite buy was that 5 qt tub of ice cream for just $2.91.  That’s half of the normal price (and the normal price is a good price).  If we had more room in our freezer I would have stocked up more!  I’m not sure if they are changing the packaging or discontinuing it or something, but it’s definitely a sweet deal!  If you’re new to Sam’s Club you can get a $20 gift card when you join!

Have you found any great grocery deals lately?  Or are you trying any new foods?  I would love to hear!

Since August was a crazy month with getting homeschooling up and going, I didn’t post our monthly grocery haul, but I’m back in September!  In fact, I’m taking you shopping with me!

Our family of 8 usually spends around $500 per month on groceries, well until 2020 hit.  Then we took a couple of months off from grocery shopping during our Quarantine Food Storage Challenge where we were eating strictly from our pantry and food storage.  And then we had a HUGE grocery haul to restock our pantry.

September’s grocery haul looked closer to normal.  We spent $460 in total, which is on the expensive side of normal for us, but as you’ll see I got some 25 lb bags of bulk foods both at Sam’s and at Winco.

If you don’t have a food storage plan for your family, go check out my getting started with food storage post.

It has been three months since our last monthly gorcery haul, so it probably comes as no surprise that June’s monthly grocery haul is the biggest one we have ever had.  We have never spent this much money on groceries ever!  We’ve never even spent anywhere near this much money on food in a month!

Don’t worry about our budget though!  This doesn’t all come out of June’s grocery budget.  We put $500 in June’s grocery budget ($400-$500 is normal for our family of 8), but we have about $500 in a budget category that we’re using to restock our food storage.

If you’re new around here, we have been having a Quarantine Food Storage Challenge where we were eating strictly from our pantry and food storage.  During that time, we put a portion of what would have been our grocery budget aside for restocking.

As you’ll see below (or in the video), we stocked and restocked a lot of things in our food storage.  We definitely won’t be eating all of this during June!!  And you see that my kids were pretty excited about what we got!

Whew!  That was A LOT of food!  Our fridge and freezer are stuffed and I’m in the process of reorganizing the food storage.  I really love having food stored and I’m excited to help you put together a food storage plan for your family too!  We’ll be talking about that soon!

I must say that I was really glad to see that the prices had not sky rocketed!  Maybe that’s due, in part, to taking so long off of shopping.  I was thrilled to see that butter had dropped in price, which is why I stocked up (that and what I learned from our food storage challenge).

How are grocery prices where you live?
